Stage IV Breast Cancer - Maintaining Excellence & Courage with Jennifer Parker, MEd

Jennifer Parker's story is one of extraordinary resilience and hope. As a stage four breast cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient, she embodies the spirit of overcoming adversity.

A little bit about Jennifer

Jennifer Parker is a mother, grandmother, and healthcare veteran with over 35 years of experience in the industry. As a public speaker and former laboratory director, she has dedicated her life to advocating for compassionate, human-centered healthcare. Jennifer's journey includes surviving stage four breast cancer and receiving a heart transplant, making her a powerful voice for those navigating similar challenges. Her story is one of hope, perseverance, and a call to action for organ donation advocacy.

Facing the Diagnosis: A Journey Begins

Jennifer's story began in 2005 when she received a life-altering diagnosis. As she recounts, "I was sitting in the doctor's office when I heard the words, 'You may not be able to go home until you receive a heart.'" This moment marked the beginning of her journey, filled with uncertainty and fear.

The first challenge came as a shock. Jennifer realized that someone had to die for her to live, a thought that weighed heavily on her. Yet, she understood that her battle against cancer started much earlier. In fact, it began with a simple breast exam that revealed a lump just as her daughter was preparing for college.

Jennifer's proactive approach led her to seek immediate medical attention. "I called my family doctor, and he was able to schedule an appointment right away," she recalls. This swift action was crucial, as it allowed her to undergo necessary tests and ultimately surgery.

The Power of Faith and Advocacy

A significant aspect of Jennifer's journey is her unwavering faith. During her first consultation, her surgeon shared a powerful message from the Bible: "Put not your trust in man, but put your trust in God." This resonated deeply with Jennifer, reinforcing her belief in the importance of faith throughout her medical journey.

As she faced chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Jennifer also leaned on her family and community for support. "I had a huge church family that helped a lot," she says. This network not only provided emotional support but also practical assistance during her treatment.

Navigating Treatment: Courage and Strength

Jennifer underwent a grueling regimen of chemotherapy and radiation, all while balancing her family responsibilities. She recalls dropping her daughter off at college just before starting her first treatment, a moment filled with mixed emotions.

"It was harder than the actual diagnosis," Jennifer shares, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of watching her child embark on a new chapter in life. Despite the challenges, she remained committed to her health and well-being. "I did everything I could to take care of myself," she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare.

Her determination paid off as she completed her treatments and returned to work within a year. Jennifer's story is not just about survival; it's about thriving against the odds.

Inspiring Change: The Heart Transplant

In July 2023, Jennifer received a heart transplant, marking another pivotal moment in her life. Just months after her surgery, she began competing in the Tennessee Senior Olympics, winning gold medals and inspiring others along the way.

Jennifer's journey has transformed her into a passionate advocate for organ donation. "I want to inspire others to become organ donors and advocate for themselves in healthcare," she states. Her belief in the importance of clarity, courage, and love drives her mission to educate others about the value of compassionate care.

Supporting women is my life's work, first as a midwife and later as a breast cancer survivor, advocate and nonprofit founder.

Having dense breast tissue and learning about the inherent risk factors that compounded my breast cancer diagnosis became the catalyst behind my purpose today.

At my mammogram the year prior to my breast cancer diagnosis. My mammogram was clear, no signs of breast cancer. However, I was one of the rare people to be informed at the time that I had dense breast tissue. An ultra sound was recommended but not covered by insurance and I'd have to pay $350 for the screening

I was a single mom at the time and soccer registration was due for my daughters team.

I couldn't do both and so I didn't get the additional screening and I signed up my daughter for soccer. I never want another woman to have to make that choice who may even be facing a more dire decision like food or putting gas in the car. At the time I didn't understand how important the adjunct screening was for dense breast tissue nor did understand just how dangerous the choice I made was.

The next year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I consider myself incredibly lucky that we were still able to treat it early. But, knowing how many women are still falling through the cracks in our health care system and missing keeps me up at night. Sharing my story and advocating for them and for our children's future is what drives me.
